4Powerful and mesmerising
By Amanda Jenkinson
Oriana Fallaci (1928-2006) was an acclaimed journalist, author and political interviewer, renowned for her coverage of wars and revolutions and her often controversial interviews with major world leaders.Alexandros Panagoulis was a maverick and often solitary figure in the Greek resistance against the 1967 Dictatorship in Greece. He was captured, tortured and imprisoned for many years for his unsuccessful attempt on Georgios Papadopoulos. After the restoration of democracy, he was elected to the Greek Parliament as a member of the Centre Union, but was always haunted by his past and desire for revenge. He died in a controversial road accident in 1976. Fallaci maintained that he had been assassinated by the remains of the Greek military Junta, as he was about to release some incriminating papers. This powerful and mesmerising book, which Fallaci called a novel, is a factual account of Panagoulis's life and the intense relationship that Fallaci herself had with him. Their tumultuous love affair dominated her life until his death. She was obviously totally captivated by this often arbitrary and damaged man, and the drama of their relationship in grippingly chronicled in this unflinching account. The early parts of the book describing Panagoulis's imprisonment and torture are particularly hard to read, being both graphic and heartrending in their account of his bravery. Falacci shows her political understanding in relating Panagoulis's struggles to those of dissidents all over the world, and shows how the tactics of oppressive regimes resemble each other in brutality and cruelty. The book sometimes becomes little more than a political rant, and there are certainly some longeurs towards the end, but overall I found this a totally compelling read and one of interest not only to those interested in Greek history but to anyone interested in the life of a man who manages to hold on to his convictions whatever happens to him and how he can transcend the evil that oppresses him. What Fallaci doesn't manage to do is make him likeable and it is difficult to comprehend how such a strong woman became so much under his sway. However, this is a book that stays with the reader, and this reissue is much to be welcomed, especially as it will bring these events and characters to a new audience.

5A Freedom Fighter, Lover, and Martyr
By Erika Borsos
Did the author write fact or fiction? Written from the perspectiove of personal experience one is left wondering ... did Oriana Fallaci *actually* know a person on whose life the novel is based? The story is about Alekos, a Greek patriot and political prisoner. It is written after the military rule in Greece (which occured in the mid-1970s). This is a gripping, powerful novel about a man who has solid convictions and beliefs. It shows you the strength and vulnerablilites of *one* individual who is caught in the midst of political changes, a man who remained true to his cause. He fought and loved on his terms. The literary technique, of a memoir is highly effective, the emotions and events depicted are *even* more penetrating and mysterious ... this is one novel I could not put down. Although first read in the mid-1980s it still has me spell-bound. I have recently reread it and the effect is still the same!Erika Borsos (Bakonyvilla)

5A personal account of a hero and a lover
By A customer
A Man is probably one of the best books I have ever read in my life. The beauty of the book is that is a very personal account of a true story, written in the style of a fictional story. Alekos Panagoulis is the Greek freedom fighter who was sentenced to death after attempting to assasinate a dictator. He was released, however, and met Oriana Fallaci...and they began a tumultous love affair. Fallaci's account of Panagoulis is two-fold -- as a hero and a lover. From start to finish, this book appeals to the emotions and is a passionate yet unflinching story of a political struggle which defies all notions of rationality. Panagoulis comes across as a tragic hero, but in a suspicious death, he achieves cult status. For the first time, Fallaci is not the star of her own work -- that accolade firmly belongs to Panagoulis. A hero is after all, only a man.
